Checkered History
40 years ago it was 1980 and a mad mother sat at her kitchen table. She was incensed because a drunken driver had just killed her daughter on the roadway. She had every reason to be, because that was horrible and it would change her life and many others forever.
That was the beginning of MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. A lot would transpire in the ensuing 40 years. She formed an organization. Before she was done she would have Governor Jerry Brown of California wrapped around her little finger. From there she went after the federal government. Not long after, she had them right in her back pocket. Then heads began to roll.
Many of us are now familiar with the term quid pro quo. This received a ton of press coverage during the impeachment attempts of a certain president of the United States. Essentially it means – you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. This was treated as a bad word despite it’s being practiced throughout politics from one end to the other.
Now, let us explore how this particular policy led the monolithic DUI industry to become the behemoth it is now. And then let us see how the MADD grew right along with it. Quid pro quo is one thing we can say. We can also say, there is no fury like that of a MADD mother.
The wailing of the bereaved mother’s who had lost children on the mean streets became the battle cry of the day. Who could argue with that, after all it is reprehensible that such things do unfortunately occur.
After all, what politician worth a grain of salt could possibly ignore the cry of mother’s all across the land. What would their constituents think? If one could possibly imagine the swarm of politicians scratching and clawing at one another, all in a dither to be the first to reach the higher moral ground. Careers would be made.
A new moral majority would rise like a Phoenix from the ashes. Indeed, could it be that there were law makers who were visionaries? Perhaps they forsaw the law enforcement opportunities looming right before their very eyes! Self important men all decked out in their robes, chanting – we will begin a new chapter of American history.
Do you have inside information on MADD? We would sure like to hear from you.
